FIBER FOR-'EM

Audrey Vaughan Good

Pine Needle baskets have long been a heritage craft for the people of Louisiana, being passed on from one person to the next. "I grew up at Pecan Island, Louisiana. There were no pine trees there. I moved to DeRidder, Louisiana in 1962 and met Mrs Emmie Pope who was making Pine Needle Baskets. She showed me how to make them. Mrs. Pope used raffia, but "I broke the raffia, so first I used the thread from the rice brand feed sacks. Then I found the sinew and have been using it ever since." (direct quote)

Miss Audrey is a versatile and prolific fiber artist. Besides making her beautiful pine needle baskets, she also sews, quilts, crochets, and has a green thumb with plants. Her projects have directly benifeted her family, from children to great grandchildren through the years. At the present she is personally hand quilting a geneology quilt, one of several she has completed for her children.
